Methodology · Probity Score

How a wallet earns its reputation, one signal at a time

Every Ethereum address gets a signed Probity Score from −100 to +100. Below zero the on-chain evidence works against it. Above zero the address has built a positive on-chain transaction track record.

What we weigh

Two forces shape reputation

The engine reads dozens of on-chain signals, separating evidence that lowers reputation from evidence that raises it.

Reputation-lowering

Pulls toward −100

  • Sanctions & OFAC matches

Direct hits on the OFAC sanctions list.

  • Mixers & privacy tooling

    Funds routed through Tornado-style anonymisers.

  • Ransomware & known-illicit activity

Address carries evidence of confirmed illicit actions.

  • Risky counterparties nearby

Bad actors directly or indirectly transacting with this wallet.

  • Anomalous behaviour

Dust attacks, dormancy bursts and off-pattern timing.

Reputation-raising

Pulls toward +100

  • Verified & recognised on-chain identity

Ties to reputable institutions and durable identity signals.

  • Exchange usage

Consistent flow through vetted centralised exchanges.

  • Wallet age & sustained history

A long, active track record over time.

  • Diverse, legitimate counterparties

Breadth of dealings, not a narrow cluster.

  • DeFi & governance participation

Real protocol use and on-chain voting.

How a screen runs

How raw transactions become a Probity Score

  1. 1

    Check the sanctions list

Match the address directly against the OFAC SDN sanctions list before anything else.

  2. 2

    Trace the connected wallets

Walk the transaction graph up to four hops out, examining every counterparty it sent to or received from.

  3. 3

    Analyse behaviour patterns

Read timing, amounts, dormancy, counterparty diversity and stablecoin discipline for anything out of pattern.

  4. 4

    Check token interactions

Review ERC-20 and stablecoin activity for exposure to flagged contracts, mixers and scam tokens.

  5. 5

    Combine into one Probity Score

Weigh the reputation-lowering evidence against the reputation-raising evidence, and resolve to a single score and band.

Reputation Bands

Probity's On-Chain Standing Scale

The score uses positive and negative values to show direction. Negative scores indicate risk or illicit exposure, while positive scores indicate recognised or reputable standing.

Confirmed Illicit

Direct match on a hard list.

−100

Critical Risk

Heavy, direct illicit exposure.

−99 … −66

High Risk

Strong risk signals.

−65 … −36

Medium Risk

Notable, mixed exposure.

−35 … −16

Low Risk

Minor concerns only.

−15 … −1

Neutral

Too little to judge.

0

Recognised

Early positive standing.

+1 … +15

Established

Consistent good history.

+16 … +30

Reputable

Strong, durable reputation.

+31 … +100

Calibrated on known cases

Weights are tuned on known illicit and known-legitimate wallets, not set by hand.

Every score is traceable

A screen lists the exact signals that moved it, so any result can be audited even with the weights kept private.

Re-scored as the chain moves

Reputation isn't frozen at first screen. Watched wallets are re-evaluated as new activity lands.
